If you’ve ever wandered through a Mexican plaza on a summer night, chances are you’ve caught the scent of roasted corn and lime floating through the air. That’s the magic of esquites, a beloved street-corner snack that’s both comforting and full of life.
At Rreal Tacos, we serve our version of this classic dish just the way it’s meant to be: simple, bold, and straight from the heart of Mexican tradition.
Esquites are one of those snacks that everyone in Mexico grows up with. They are the go-to comfort snack: kernels of corn shaved off the cob, simmered or grilled, and then tossed with mayo, lime, cheese, and a touch of chile. Served in cups and eaten with a spoon, it’s a dish you’ll find everywhere from city markets to small-town fairs.
While elote (corn on the cob) steals some of the spotlight, esquites bring their own kind of joy. It’s the same flavor mix, just easier to share and a little less messy. At Rreal Tacos, you’ll find both on our menu, each one honoring that same street-food spirit.
Think of esquites and elote as siblings: same DNA, different personalities. Elote brings you that charred, handheld experience straight off the grill, while esquites trade the stick for a spoon and a little extra creaminess.
Both feature the same star ingredients —mayo, lime, queso cotija, and chile— and both taste like home to anyone who’s ever grown up around a street-corn stand. We keep them side by side on the menu because, honestly, choosing between them is impossible.
Our esquites start with shaved corn tossed in chipotle mayo, fresh lime juice, queso cotija, and a dusting of chilito (chile powder). The mix of creamy, tangy, and slightly smoky flavors makes it the perfect way to wake up your palate before the tacos hit the table.
You can treat esquites like a side, a snack, or a starterm there’s no wrong way. We love sharing them around the table with chips & salsa, queso dip, or guacamole, especially when friends are debating which taco wins the crown.
Also, for a rounded up meal, esquites go beautifully with any of our signature tacos: try them next to the Al Pastor, with its roasted pineapple sweetness, or the Beef Barbacoa, slow-roasted for more than 12 hours.
For drinks, go citrusy to keep things fresh. A Rreal Margarita is a timeless choice, while the Spicy Pineapple Margarita adds a playful kick that pairs perfectly with the chipotle mayo in the corn. If you’re skipping alcohol, our Mango & Pineapple Mocktail or a chilled Agua Fresca (horchata or passionfruit, depending on the day) keeps that same refreshing rhythm.
Esquites may look simple, but behind every spoonful there’s a story, one that connects the street vendors of Mexico to our tables here in the U.S.
At Rreal Tacos, we’re proud to keep that story alive with every dish we serve. Stop by, grab a seat, and taste how real Mexican street corn should be: warm, bright, and a little bit addictive.
